Mná na hÉireann: Revolutionary Women Postcards

€30.00

*Shipping starts early July

These postcards commemorate just some of the women that played extremely important roles throughout the revolutionary years in Ireland.

This project was born out of my frustration of the lack of statues commemorating women in Limerick City. My research took me onto the profile of Kathleen Clarke, who lived just up the road from my apartment. Clarke was heavily involved in Ireland’s fight for freedom from British rule. One of her involvements which inspired this project was post the 1916 rising, Clarke commissioned artists to draw up postcard designs to raise money for the widows and children left impoverished by the events that transpired.

I spent many hours trawling through the National Library of Ireland and other online archives searching for references from postcards created at the time. My aim was to create a series of A6 prints commemorating women and their roles in the revolutionary years in Ireland. These women were fighters, leaders, artists, writers, and craftspeople.

I would like to stress that this is just an extremely small selection of those who contributed to Ireland’s fight for freedom. Unfortunately, I could not dedicate a card to each and every woman so I would highly recommend further reading of this time period and of the individuals and groups that fought for the cause.

This postcard set include a card of:

  • Maud Gonne - republican revolutionary, suffragette and actress.

  • Constance Markievicz - politician, revolutionary, nationalist, suffragist, and socialist who was the first woman elected to the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

  • Margaret Skinnider -revolutionary and feminist who fought during the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin as a sniper.

  • Kathleen Clarke - founder member of Cumann na mBan and first female Lord Mayor of Dublin.

  • Hanna Sheehy Skeffington - suffragette and Irish nationalist, she was a founding member of the Irish Women's Franchise League in 1908 with the aim of obtaining women's voting rights.

  • Cumann na mBan - Irish Republican women’s paramilitary organisation with the aim to advance the cause of Irish liberty and to organise Irish women in the furtherance of this object.

  • Dun Emer - was an Irish Arts and Crafts textile studio with their mission to educate and train up local young women in the necessary skills while also keeping traditional crafts alive.

  • Lady Augusta Gregory - dramatist, folklorist and theatre manager.

These cards are double sided with information on the back about each individual and organisation.

Approx A6 size and risograph printed on 300gsm white card.
